North American Menopause Society’s Ties to Wyeth Pharmaceuticals

The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) describes itself as "the leading nonprofit scientific organization devoted to promoting women's health and quality of life through an understanding of menopause.” Unfortunately, as it advocates for policies that benefit Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, NAMS rarely discloses its numerous financial ties to the pharmaceutical manufacturer.

The world’s number one manufacturer of prescription hormone products, Wyeth is waging a campaign to restrict patients’ access to one alternative to its products – compounded, bioidentical hormones. By limiting patients’ hormone treatment options, Wyeth would drive sales of its own, proprietary hormone products. NAMS is one of several organizations that receive money from Wyeth and support this campaign.

NAMS lobbies lawmakers, regulators, the media and other healthcare organizations in support of Wyeth campaign. A former president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women even criticized NAMS for conducting and promoting a survey in 2002 designed to deflect attention from the health risks of Wyeth’s products. And it does all this while consistently failing to disclose that it receives money from Wyeth.

On November 15, 2006, Dr. Wulf Utian, executive director of NAMS, appeared on CNN’s Larry King Live to defend Wyeth’s position. Concerning his relationship with Wyeth, Dr. Utian stated: “I am not funded by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. I'm not.” His declaration is patently false.

Evidence of Dr. Utian’s and NAMS’s financial ties to Wyeth is readily available on the Internet. Some examples follow.

NAMS receives unrestricted educational grants from Wyeth, which are used to fund awards, including:

  • North American Menopause Society/Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Women's Health Research Institute Clinical Research Fellowship Grant:
This $20,000 fellowship was established to support a clinical research project in an area of menopause-related medicine. Funds for round-trip coach transportation and on-site expenses to attend the NAMS Annual Meeting are also provided.

  • NAMS/Wyeth Pharmaceuticals SERM Research Award:
This award recognizes an individual whose body of work has advanced the understanding of the use of selective estrogen-receptor modulators (SERMs) in postmenopausal women for any indication, including, but not limited to, osteoporosis.

  • NAMS/Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Excellence Awards:
This award recognizes 10 nurse practitioners and physician assistants who have demonstrated excellence in the field of menopause practice.

Wyeth has supported many of NAMS’s initiatives and programs.

  • Wyeth is listed as one of four manufacturers that are Premier Partners of NAMS 17th Annual Meeting in October 2006. The Premier Partners are described as “hav(ing) provided generous grants to help support not only the Society’s Mission, but also the special activities of the 17th Annual Meeting.”

  • Wyeth endowed a $200,000 NAMS fund for the NAMS/Wyeth Wulf H. Utian Endowed Lectureship Fund.

  • NAMS lists Wyeth as a “2006 Partner in Menopause Education.” Partnership fees start at $8,000 a year.

  • NAMS advertises in and partners with Wyeth’s Changes magazine.

NAMS’s leadership is closely associated with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

  • Five of the 14 2005/2006 NAMS Board of Trustees members have financial ties to Wyeth.

  • Gloria A. Bachmann, MD, “one of the founding members of the International Menopause Society and the North American Menopause Society” is “engaged in research for […] Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.”
